Liriodendron tulipifera ‘Edward Gursztyn’ is a compact, ornamental cultivar of the American tulip tree. It was developed in Poland at the Gursztyn nursery and introduced around 2009–2010. Named after Edward Gursztyn, the founder of the nursery in Braniewo, this variety is particularly appreciated for its small size, symmetrical form, and hardiness.
Main Characteristics
Growth Habit: Compact, slow-growing tree. After 15 years, it typically reaches about 1.8 to 2 meters in height and width, with a spherical, dense crown.
Leaves: Smaller than the species type, typically trilobed, bright green in summer, turning golden yellow in autumn.
Flowers: Rarely produces flowers; no flowering has been reliably observed in this cultivar so far.
Hardiness: Very frost-tolerant, down to –30°C or even lower. Suitable for USDA zones 5b and above.
Sun/Soil Needs: Prefers full sun and thrives in moist, well-drained, slightly acidic soils.
Awards and Uses
Awards: Winner of gold medals at horticultural fairs including Green is Life 2010, Gardenia 2012, and Plantarium 2013.
Ideal For: Small gardens, patios, terraces (even in containers), or as a standalone specimen tree due to its neat, regular shape.
Maintenance
Watering: Requires consistent moisture, especially when young or during dry spells.
Diseases: Resistant to most common diseases and pests.
Pruning: Minimal pruning required. If needed, light shaping can be done in spring.
